2008 Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award from the National Environmental Education Foundation
The Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award is awarded annually to an outstanding educator who has successfully integrated environmental education into his or her daily education programs. The award will be given to an educator who can serve as an inspiration and model for others. A $5,000 cash award will be provided for the recipient to continue their work in environmental education.
The Richard C. Bartlett Award honors teachers that are bringing environmental education into the curriculum and the community, not just teaching about environmental challenges but also engaging students in the solution.
Do you know a teacher who stands out among the rest? If so, please nominate him/her for the 2008 Richard C. Bartlett Award. Nominations will be accepted until June 30th, 2008. Click here for more information.
Museum Teaching Fellowship, June-July 2008 at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science and the Albuquerque BioPark
Are you an elementary school teacher who would like to learn more about programs, materials, and other resources at either the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (NMMNHS) or the Albuquerque BioPark to enhance learning and teaching in your classroom? Would you like to work on your own self-directed natural history or conservation science learning project? Then don’t miss this great opportunity to become deeply immersed in the NMMNHS, or the Albuquerque BioPark, as part of this summer’s Museum Teaching Fellowship, co-sponsored by the Science Education Institute of the Southwest (SEIS) and the Albert I. Pierce Foundation.
Up to seven elementary teachers will be chosen to participate in this 80-hour program that offers valuable learning and resource opportunities, as well as a $1,000 stipend. Those teachers who choose the Albuquerque BioPark session (includes Rio Grande Zoo, Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Botanic Garden and Tingley Beach) will meet from June 16 – June 19. Teachers choosing the NMMNHS session will meet from June 23 – June 26. An additional 48 hours of self-directed study is required for all teachers participating in the program, to be completed by July 11. You will be asked to give a final presentation at the conclusion of the Museum Teaching Fellowship.

Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program
E-mail: Maceo_Martinet@fws.gov
Program URL: http://www.fws.gov/southwest/es/NewMexico/PFW_home.cfm
SYNOPSIS: The Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program (Partners) is run by US Fish and Wildlife scientists. Partners is a voluntary partnership program that provides technical and financial assisstance to non-Federal landowners and schools to improve fish and wildlife habitat. Partners funding for schools can provide essential start up money ($5,000) for educational programming designed to get students outdoors and to improve wildlife habitat (whether on school property or nearby natural areas).
Through the Partners program, wetlands are being restored and riparian (streamside) areas and streams enhanced through changes in grazing management, removal of non-native vegetation and planting native vegetation. Uplands, including prairie grasslands are being managed to improve habitat for sensitive grassland species. Education opportunities are often provided through these projects with school children, neighbors, and friends.
If you are contemplating development of a project that meets the goals of the program, you can apply for funding through the Partners program by filling out an application form, obtained from our website. The form should include a general description of the project, the habitat and species it will benefit, the proposed project's location and the anticipated costs. The application can be submitted at any time. Projects are evaluated and rated on habitat value and funding decisions are usually made in the spring of each year. Lexus and Scholastic Announce Launch of Environmental Challenge Education Program
Automaker lexus ( http://www.lexus.com/about/corporate/community.html ) has announced the launch of the lexus environmental challenge, a program designed to educate and empower students to take action to improve the environment. The program encourages middle and high school students across the united states to develop and implement environmental programs that positively impact their communities. More than $1 million in total scholarships and grants will be awarded to students, teachers, and schools. Lexus has joined with scholastic ( http://www.scholastic.com/ ), the global children's publishing, education, and media company, to create the program.
The Lexus Environmental Challenge has two distinct elements: standards-based supplementary educational materials and a contest to reward environmental action. The contest helps young people apply what they've learned in class through the program and empowers them to make improvements in their community by participating in any of the four environmental team challenges.
Middle and high school teams comprised of five to ten students and one teacher advisor are invited to participate in four initial challenges, each addressing a different environmental element -- land, water, air, and climate.
For each of the challenges, teams will define an environmental issue that is important to them, develop an action plan to address the issue, implement the plan, and report on the results. Teams are invited to participate in as many of the four challenges as they choose. Submission Deadlines are: Challenge #1
(Land) -- October 5, 2007; Challenge #2 (Water) -- November 5, 2007; Challenge #3 (Air) -- December 5, 2007; and Challenge #4
(Climate) -- January 7, 2008.
There will be sixteen winning teams for each of the four challenges -- eight middle school and eight high school teams. The winning teams will each receive a total of $3,000 in scholarships and grants. The sixty-four winners of the first four challenges will be invited to participate in the Final Challenge, where teams will develop an environmental program with the potential to impact the world in a dramatic way. From the Final Challenge entries, fourteen finalists and two grand-prize-winning teams will be selected. Each of the fourteen finalists will receive a total of $50,000 in grants and scholarships, and the two grand-prize-winning teams will each receive $75,000. The money will be shared by the students, teacher advisor, and school.
Full program information, including rules and entry details, can be viewed at the Scholastic Web site.
